Speech sound disorder- what is it?

Speech sound disorder - this is a larger umbrella term that includes organic speech sound disorders, including neurological disorders and structural disorders as well as functional speech sound disorders. When there is no known cause for a speech sound disorder, and these referred to as functional speech sound disorders and includes impairments in articulation and phonological disorders.

Articulation- is the ability to move the tongue, lips, and jaw in coordination to produce speech sounds which make up words. The clear production of sounds is important so that others can interpret basic wants, needs, ideas, and conversations. Difficulties with speech can impact how well a child can interact with adults and peers within their environment. Articulation difficulties can also impact literacy skills, such as decoding and spelling. It is best to address speech delays early in development to prevent potential negative impacts on a child’s development, especially with social, academic and emotional development.

How can I tell if my child has difficulty with articulation?

  • Difficulty being understood by familiar listeners and other people within their environment.

  • Becoming frustrated while trying to talk. Having difficulty producing speech sounds that other children the same age can produce.

  • Produce speech that is less clear than other children the same age

What is the difference between an articulation disorder and a phonological disorder?

They are similar in that both impact the way children produce speech sounds and their ability to be understood. Articulation disorders are errors in individual speech sounds, such as distortions and substitutions. These can be caused by motor difficulties. Phonological disorders are rule based errors that affect more than one sound.
